Vasography

Understanding Vasogram: Purpose, Procedure & Safety

What is a Vasogram?

A vasogram is a diagnostic imaging procedure used for the complete evaluation of azoospermic and severely oligospermic men. It specifically assesses the patency (openness) of the vas deferens and ejaculatory ducts to determine whether there is any blockage that may be causing male infertility.

Vasography is considered a crucial radiological technique in male infertility workups, especially for identifying obstructive causes of azoospermia.

How is Vasography Performed?

The procedure involves the injection of a contrast dye directly into the vas deferens. This allows for clear visualization of the male reproductive tract, including:

  • The epididymis
  • The vasa deferentia
  • The seminal vesicles
  • The ejaculatory ducts

It is a relatively simple, rapid, and safe method used during surgical exploration or microsurgical procedures.

Are There Any Complications of Vasography?

Based on available evidence and clinical studies:

  • Vasography does not appear to damage the vas deferens.
  • No patient transitioned from oligospermia to azoospermia following the procedure.
  • No significant immediate or long-term complications have been reported.
